Lecture: Three life-changing years in Uganda

Charlotte native Carrie Wagner is a writer and photographer whose recent book, "Village Wisdom: Immersed in Uganda, Inspired by Job, Changed for Life" ($34.95; www.villagewisdombook.com ) chronicles the three years she and her husband worked with Habitat for Humanity International in a rural African village through journal entries, essays and letters. A collection of her photos, "Portraits of Uganda," was recently exhibited at the Bank of America Plaza in Atlanta.

She will speak at 10 a.m. Monday at Queens University of Charlotte, 1900 Selwyn Ave. There's no admission to hear her presentation in Sykes Auditorium.

Tips on gingerbread house contest

The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa is getting ready for the 18th annual National Gingerbread House Competition, which awards more than $12,000 in cash and prizes. Top entries are later displayed at the Grove Park Inn.

To give potential entrants a head start, a complimentary demonstration on how to build a gingerbread house will be offered from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1 in the resort's Grand Ballroom C. (Doors open at 5:30 p.m.) Inn chef James Hall and Blue Ridge Dining Room sous chef Lance Ethridge-Padilla will demonstrate and guide participants in the necessary techniques for success. Motoring festival is Oct. 29-30 and Nov. 6-7

The ninth annual Hilton Head Island Concours d'Elegance & Motoring Festival - a quartet of outdoor automotive events - will be Oct. 29-30 and Nov. 6-7 in Hilton Head and Savannah, Ga.

The Savannah/Hilton Head Speed Classic will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 29-31 at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa, on Savannah's Hutchinson Island. Attractions for fans of performance cars include historic racing, hot laps rides with certified drivers around the track at racing speeds and touring laps around the track in your own car.

Motoring Midway: Memory Lane to the Fast Lane, is 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 6-7 at The Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn, on Hilton Head Island. It compares and contrasts the then/now aspects of racing vehicles and technology through exhibits. You can also test-drive the latest makes and models provided by the event's automotive sponsors.

Car Club Jamboree, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 6, also at The Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Corn. It offers a mix of more than 150 cars covering the history of the automobile, from modern day high-performance muscle cars and hot rods to European sports cars. This year, the Jamboree celebrates Italian design (including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo and Fiat).

Concours d'Elegance, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at The Coastal Discovery Museum. The festival's centerpiece event showcases 150 vintage vehicles competing for "best of show" honors.

Admission: $20-$30 per event per day; $90 for festival pass valid Oct. 29-31 and Nov. 6-7. Other package admissions and group discounts available.
