Lamborghini Fact | Facts About The Lamborghini

Lamborghini creates some of the world's most scintillating sports cars. The company is situated in a small village called Sant'Agata Bolognese in Italy. It was founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini in the year 1963. Ferruccio Lamborghini passed away in 1993 at the age of 77. He is still remembered and he continues to live on with his contribution in the car industry.

Initially the Lamborghini S.p.A. started out as an autonomous company. In 1978, Lamborghini filed for bankruptcy and an Italian court was handed over the responsibility to find a suitable buyer. A Swiss based company called Mimran Brothers bought it. Although things were going on smoothly, the Mimran Brothers decided to sell the company to the American car manufacturer Chrysler. Under the new ownership of Chrysler, the famous Lamborghini Diablo came into being. But Lady Luck seem to distance herself from Chrysler and in 1994, Chrysler was forced to sell the brand Lamborghini to an Indonesian investment group headed by Tommy Suharto. Luck failed again there too and as a result of economic crisis in the 1990s, Lamborghini was taken over by the German car manufacturer Audi AG in 1998. Audi was successful in bringing back the Lamborghini fame by producing more exotic models.

The first Lamborghini called the Lamborghini 350 GTV was unveiled at the Turin Auto Show in 1963. The car was launched commercially and it tuned out to be a tremendous hit. More than 130 units were built in that year and it was a complete sell out. The 350 GTV has a top speed of 280 km/h. The next year a smaller version of the same model was launched called 350GT which delivered a top speed of 240 km/h. In 1974, another model called Countach was unleashed and this car could run 300 km/h. The Diablo is in fact the successor of the Countach.

The Le Mans version Murcielago R-GT is considered to be one of the fastest Lamborghini model which is said to have attained the top speed of 370 km/h, whereas the road version of the same model called Murcielago LP640 can deliver a high speed of 340 km/h. Both the versions are powered by an above 6.0-litre V12 engine.

The latest models of Lamborghini are seen with those cool scissor doors which can be turned upward and forward on a hinge itself. Every Lamborghini model comes with a powerful V8 or above engines. The production of V8 engine was stopped long back in 1989 and the legendary V12 engine was introduced into the cars. But the latest model Gallardo is seen with a V10 engine.

Lamborghini is not just associated with super sports cars but also with marine engines. Today Lamborghini stands tall in a very high position among with other biggies in the automobile industry. Lamborghini cars have outstanding performance and also carry fat price tags. Lamborghini car personifies sophistication, class and pride.

Ferrari Lamborghini | Fast 'N Fugly: The Worst-Looking Supercars Of The Past 10 Years

Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martinâ€"it's become almost an unspoken rule that with great power comes great beauty. Supercars can be defined not only in terms of large engines and tiny 0 to 62 times, but in terms of curvaceous, flowing, satisfying looks.

Often, but not always. There are derivative designs, there are supercars with "great personalities" and then there are the ones that make you want to curl up into the fetal position and bawl until something beautiful happens. Representing the last faction, these uggos are here to remind us that all the speed and power in the world can't make up for devastatingly flawed looks. They have the engines, aerodynamics and price tags to be called supercars, but you still wouldn't be caught dead in one. What their looks do well is make us appreciate the Vantages and 599s that much more.

Panoz Abruzzi

The first and newest contender in the ugliest supercar of the decade race is the Panoz Abruzzi, which was unveiled for the first time this past June. We should probably move this up a few spots because Panoz took their sweet, old time to unveil this monster, but because we like the retro back-end, we'll leave it right here. The back-end is nice, the 600-hp engine sounds good, but it's all butter face. Good news: at the time they announced it, this 400,000-euro monstrosity wasn't street legal in the States. We'll keep ducking and hope the bullet misses.

Covini C6W

Lemme' guess: when it comes to top speed, four wheels is better than two, so it follows to reason that six wheels should be better than four. Actually, Covini went against over a hundred years of automotive convention for more mundane reasons: extra stability, less of a chance of hydroplaning and better grip, to name a few.

Wow! That sounds great; maybe every car should be built with six wheels! If only they wouldn't look so god-awful ugrageous, maybe they would be. Can't you just picture this thing sitting quietly in the corner of the lot next to Porsches and Corvettesâ€" even Chevy Aveosâ€"minding its business, while whispers, taunts and jeers get louder and louder. Car wasn't made to have six wheels, and the C6W proves it. What looks like a decent, albeit completely unoriginal design, is destroyed by that awkward front-four set-up. Unveiled to gasping onlookers in 2004, after 30 years of production, the Italian-made Covini features a 433-hp 4.2-liter Audi V8 that delivers 185 mph of the most embarrassing speed that you can find. Very limited production of less than 10 cars was scheduled to begin last year. We're not certain if it did, but we're hoping against it.

Hispano Suiza

A newcomer to the world of painful supercars, the Hispano Suiza was shown at this year's Geneva Motor Show. It's based on an Audi R8 and features a supercharged version of the R8's 5.2-liter V10 worth 739 horsepower. It carries a price tag of close to a million dollars and hits 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. So it definitely has the supercar mettle. But definitely not the looks. Did they really think they were going to get away with that flat, table-top of a hood, shark teeth and pointy beak? Not while people with a modicum of taste still inhabit this world. This car is such an ugly stepchild that they didn't even bother giving it a proper name.

Weber Sportscars Faster One

We're not sure what's worse: the Weber's "Faster One" name or its terrible, terrible looks. If BMW's iconic kidney grille had been designed by a guy that was 59 percent blind in both eyes, it would probably look something like this. And BMW would be as obscure as Swiss-based Weber Sportscars to this very day.

Debuted in 2008, the Faster One features a 900-hp twin-supercharged V8 engine. The minute that engine meets the bay, the good ends and the awful takes over. So often car designers like to refer to nature when talking about there designs. Weber is not one of those. Because this thing is absolutely unnatural. In fact, nothing in nature will ever look like this. God (or who/whatever's in charge) wouldn't allow it. So even though the Faster One's looks purportedly relate directly to the superior aerodynamics that give it a claimed top speed of 260 mph, it's still an abomination. I mean, how often is the owner going to hit 260 compared with how often he's going to have to stare this thing in its eerie puss and wonder why he ever paid $1.5 million for it.

Mitsuoka Motors Orochi

If the DEA ever finds itself with nothing to do, they should consider pulling a raid or two on small supercar shops. Because I swear the designers must do nothing but cocaine-binge and abuse their graphic design tools for weeks straight. A lot of these cars wouldn't look half-bad if the designer had just known when to call it a night. Instead, they kept dog-piling on, ruining any semblance of aesthetics.

The Japanese-born Orochi is the best example of that here. Take out the extra set of headlights (those looked alright on the 1995 Celica, but they're not cutting it here), get rid of all those queer-looking hood vents, straighten the wavy front-end a little and wipe the wry grin right off this thing's face and you might have a decent, if not breathtaking, machine. A lot less super than other cars here, the NSX-based Orochi debuted in 2001 as a concept. It features a Toyota-sourced 3.3-liter V6 engine worth 233 horses. Yet, Mitsuoka demands a price over $100,000 for it. Luckily, the Orochi is a Japan-only. Recently, Mitsuoka put these up for daily rent in Japan; all it costs is $390 a day to eliminate any chance you'll ever bring a Japanese gal back to your hotel.

Beck LM800

95 percent of the time, I'm glowingly proud to be of Swiss descent. I mean, in nearly everything they do, the Swiss are at the top of the gameâ€"watches, banking, chocolate, knives, etc. But not in cars. No, for some reason, the Swiss not only fail to make any popular cars, they make the creepiest, wrongest supercars in the world. So when talking supercars, I tell people the last name is German.

The LM800 was introduced at the luxury motor show in Vienna in 2007. Now, we've seen some ugly cars on this list, but I'm going to go ahead and make the argument that this is the worst of the bunch. It looks like a discount Enzo kit that someone built in the parking lot of their apartment complex. And by someone, I mean an eight-year-old kid who's never met his father. Spine-shiveringly hideous. And I really can't see how that big, flat cow-catcher Beck calls a front-end could do anything for aerodynamics. But, like the Faster One, the LM800 follows the ‘function over form' ethic to an extreme and its shape supposedly ninjas drag into a corner. Plus, when your car weighs 1,980 pounds (that's well under Lambo's stripped-down Sesto ), and you're using 650-hp worth of twin-turbocharged 4.2-liter V8 engine, it probably wouldn't slow you down either way. The $600,000 car hits 60 mph in 3 seconds flat and tops out at the once-world-record speed of 217 mph. Unlike some of the others here, this one looks just as bad in back as it does in the front…and from the right, from the left, from the back corner, underneath…

Ferrari Fact | 2007 Canadian Grand Prix Preview

This Formula One season, the man to beat is Fernando Alonso of the McLaren team. Compared to other teams, Ferrari is a lot more confident of overturning the result of the Monaco Grand Prix.

In order for the race car to meet the team's expectations, it must suit the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, a tight track that demands excellent aerodynamics, a powerful engine, good traction and good stability under heavy braking. And both the McLaren and the Ferrari teams are famed to have these characteristics. This is the why the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix is expected to create another tough struggle between the major teams.

The event will also be heightened by Lewis Hamilton's urge to bring home the bacon. Hamilton, the newcomer team mate of Alonso, is one of the strong names in this year's Formula One season. In the Monaco race, critics said that Hamilton had a great chance to be the number one racer. "The result in Monaco was great for everyone in the team, it was a dream result considering it was my first year there in a Formula One car, and it means we are going to North America at the top of both championship tables," Hamilton said.

He added, "I cannot wait to get back on track and continue to focus on racing. This will be my debut at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve; because of the chances there are to pass, it looks like a great track to compete on. It has some very distinctive characteristics, such as the low grip, the long straights, hard braking and so on, so my initial laps will focus on understanding all these and how best to drive the track to get good times. I have completed preparation work with my engineers at the McLaren Technology Centre specific to Canada and the US, and it will be great to finally take to the track here in Montreal."

Montreal's track comprises several quick corners and long straights with a blend of slow corners that require heavy braking from more than 320 km/h four times during the lap. Complicating the situation is the fact that, contrary to Monaco, the car runs in low-drag, low-to-medium downforce configuration. Moreover, the engineers of the teams need to achieve precise mechanical set-up in the suspension to give the drivers the advantage. Additionally, brake disc and pad wear could give a trouble the rear tyres take a beating, and this is a tough track for engines too, with full throttle for 65 percent of the lap.

BMW Sauber team, the third in the constructors' championship, is keeping a wary eye on Renault, who has improved significantly in the previous races. Robert Kubica expects to be quick at the track as he believes that the low-downforce Montreal suits his driving style. Reliable race parts like the enhanced BMW oil filter could push the team's performance a little better.

"I am really looking forward to Montreal as it is one of my favourite tracks in the Formula One calendar. It means driving with lower downforce for the first time this season. Last year on the Friday I was quite good there. I like the track because it is a street circuit and has pretty low grip, improving during the weekend," Kubica noted.

He added, "It will be interesting to see how I can cope with the Bridgestone tyres compared to the Michelins of last year, and how I have to change my driving style. I will see how big an influence it was for me to change to the different tyres."

Ferrari Trivia | China Gives US 'assurances' On Export Of Rare-earth Minerals

In a meeting here at a summit of 18 Asian nations, China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi gave Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton "assurances" about its policy on the export of the minerals, according to a statement by the State Department. The assurances marked the first time that a Chinese official has directly addressed the issue in a meeting with an American counterpart.

China controls 97 percent of the world's supply of rare-earth metals, 17 elements vital to the manufacture of high-tech products ranging from cellphones to the U.S. military's precision-guided munitions. China's move to restrict their sales has alarmed advanced economies around the globe.

Yang's assurances notwithstanding, tensions continued between China and Japan. Chinese officials blasted both Japan and the United States over disputed islands in the western Pacific, declining to hold a meeting with Japan's prime minister and lecturing Clinton about the U.S. stance on the islands.

The moves by Beijing surprised diplomats because China and Japan had been expected to use the summit to improve ties. Relations deteriorated last month when Japan's coast guard detained a Chinese fishing boat captain after he plowed his trawler into two coast guard vessels. China cancelled a series of meetings with Japanese officials and stopped exporting rare earths. Japan then released the captain.

On Friday, China accused Japan of ruining the atmosphere for talks between Premier Wen Jiabao and his Japanese counterpart, Naoto Kan, accusing Japan of giving "untrue" media statements. China's Foreign Ministry then turned on Clinton, expressing "deep dissatisfaction" with her views on the islands.

China's comments came in reaction to a joint press conference that Clinton held Wednesday in Hawaii with Seiji Maehara , Japan's foreign minister. Maehara reiterated that the Senkaku Islands, known as the Diaoyu Islands in China, were part of Japanese territory, and Clinton said the disputed island chain falls within the Japan-U.S. security alliance.

"The Senkaku Islands, in terms of history and international law, are inherent territory of Japan," Maehara said.

Japan's actions violated "China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue said, according to the official Chinese news agency, Xinhua.

China's Premier Wen then failed to meet with Kan on Friday evening in Hanoi, even though Japanese officials had said a meeting had been set. Chinese diplomats denied a meeting had been scheduled.

The rift between China and Japan is just one of several China-related disputes bedeviling the region , which is the world's most dynamic economically.

China has also alarmed its neighbors to the south -- in Southeast Asia -- by its claims to have sovereignty over the whole of the South China Sea, a 1 million square mile waterway through which more than 50 percent of the world's trade passes and which is believed to hold vast oil and gas reserves.

After years of playing down the issue, the U.S. government began focusing on China's claims this year in response to concerns from Southeast Asian nations that China had begun aggressively pursuing its claims. In July, Clinton, again in Hanoi, effectively rejected China's claims to the whole sea and pushed China and the other claimants - including Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia - to engage in negotiations.

On Saturday, Clinton reiterated the U.S. interests in the waterway, declaring that "the United States has a national interest in the freedom of navigation and unimpeded lawful commerce."

She did, however, praise China, following indications that Beijing has decided to resume multilateral talks with Southeast Asian nations over a code of conduct in the South China Sea.

Lamborghini Show | Lamborghini Showcase Its Talents - But Not Through Motor Shows

Sometimes a car manufacturer does not only do motor shows in order to showcase its capabilities and cars. It does other types of trade shows too. Lamborghini is in Paris showcasing its skills and capability in the development and application of carbon fibre at the JEC Composite Show held on the 13th to 15th April 2010. The JEC is and organization dedicated to promoting composites internationally. It supports the development of these materials by fostering knowledge transfer and exchanges between suppliers and users. To date, the JEC network connects more than 250,000 professionals worldwide from 96 different countries. Lamborghini is the Honoured Guest of the Paris JEC Composite Show, where Lamborghini's Director of Research and Development Mr. Maurizio Reggiani held an opening address.

Lamborghini had taken up a booth displaying the latest composite material technologies that the company has developed and/or used and basically showcased the stealth fighter lookalike Lamborghini Reventn at the show.

More than 1,000 companies from all areas of the composite materials industry (especially the aeronautical/aviation companies) had participated at the JEC Composite Show. And you would know that product marketing is also carried out here, where CEOs of these companies (who basically can afford a Lamborghini) are present. I would be pretty confident that a few side deals of car enquiries would be entertained aside from the actual composite technology discussion going on.

Anyway, Carbon-fibre reinforced (CFRP) composite materials are becoming key factor within the high-performance automobile sector, especially since this material is extremely high stiff and very light weight. These materials allow high-precision lightweight design and construction and results in an improvement in power-to-weight ratio. This in turn delivers increased driving dynamics while reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Furthermore, within Lamborghini, the utilization of composite materials enables new solutions in the construction of components and, when used as a visual material, offers an extremely aesthetic look to the items utilizing it. Take a look at the Reventn as a very good example.

Lamborghini first gained experience in the application of carbon-fibre composite materials back in the 1980s with the Countach. And now, the flagship model Murcilago (base model of the Reventn) makes extensive use of CFRP in its bodyshell. The bodyshell of the Murcilago weighs only 303 kilograms. A further example is the new Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera, through the increased application of carbon-fibre, its weight compared with the base model has been reduced by around 70 kilograms. The outcome is improved performance with reduced fuel consumption as well as a CO2 reduction of 20.5 percent compared with its predecessor.

If you have an interest in composites, JEC Composites Show Asia will be held in Singapore on 12-14 October 2010 tentatively at the Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre. Visitors may be limited to trade visitors (or students) only by the looks of it. And Lamborghini may not be participating in this upcoming show but from the 2009 show in Singapore had some automotive companies, mainly Toyota Auto Body Co Ltd and lots of aeronautical composites based companies (if you're into aviation that is).

Ferrari Sports Car | Ferrari Looks To Catch Up With Mclaren

After a good start at the Australian Grand Prix which saw Finn Kimi Raikkonen taking the first victory of the 2007 Formula One season in a very convincing manner, Scuderia Ferrari may have cooled down as McLaren dominates the early stages of the season.

Before going into the North American leg of the Formula One season, Ferrari aimed to reduce the lead posted by McLaren. Unfortunately for the Italian team though, McLaren dominated both races in North America as Lewis Hamilton won both the Canadian and the United States Grands Prix.

But now that the next race will be held in Europe, Ferrari looks to improve their performance to catch up with their archrival. They currently have 71 championship points to their credit while McLaren is in front with 106 points.

At the Canadian Grand Prix, the Ferrari duo of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen performed poorly with Massa being disqualified. After the Brazilian was disqualified, Raikkonen only managed to score a fifth-place finish, good for four points. At the United States Grand Prix, the duo performed better but still far from McLaren's performance. With their F2007 Formula One cars which are faster than road bound Ferraris with KYB performance parts, they took home a three-four finish. This gave Ferrari eleven points. Unfortunately for them, the McLaren duo of Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso finished one-two to take home 18 points.

"No doubt that we are not happy about the result," says Stefano Domenicali, Ferrari's sporting director. "Third and fourth is not our standard, because we wanted to come here to North America to try to reduce the gap and we did the opposite because we lost 15 points," he added further.

Ferrari's head of track operations, Luca Baldisserri, the team's problem is the result of their below par qualifying times. In a race such as Formula One, qualifying is as important as the race itself since this is where a driver can fight for the pole position which is important since all Formula One cars fielded are highly efficient and very fast machines.

"The problem is that being behind in qualifying means that we will have a difficult race," says Baldisserri. "To be honest, this is our pace in qualifying. It would seem that when McLaren put on new tires, they are much more consistently quick than we are. There's a slight correlation with the new soft compound tire, so we have tried to investigate more in that direction what we are missing and that's the main point of development."

The Italian contingent has recently concluded testing at the Silverstone Circuit which will host the British Grand Prix. The testing though is in preparation for the French Grand Prix. Luca Badoer sat behind the steering wheel of the Ferrari Formula One car for the tests. He posted the fifth fastest lap time the team looked into the overall setup of the car to get the best performance out of their new car.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa is currently in third in the driver's championship standings. The Brazilian already has two wins this season and has 39 points to his credit. Teammate Kimi Raikkonen sits at fourth with 32 points after seven races so far. He only leads Nick Heidfeld of BMW Sauber by six points.

Lamborghini Sports Car | Audi R8 Plymouth

<!-- @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } -->

Audi R8 Plymouth

In 2006 Audi released its mid-engined sports car, it used Audi's trademark Quattro permanent 4 wheel drive system, also known as all wheel drive system. The R8 is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo platform.

The Audi R8 is inspired by the success of the R8 race car which is why it shares its name with the 24 hours Le Mans winning R8 Le Mans Prototype. The R8 uses an aluminium monocoque and is built around space frame principles.

The R8 is available with an option of 2 engines, a 420bhp 4.2 V8 or the 517bhp V10. The 4.2 V8 can reach 62mph in 4.6 seconds, very impressive, even more impressive though is the V10 which can do it in 3.9 seconds!

As you would expect, the Audi R8 is a pleasure to drive with bags of traction and immense cornering grip. What I love about these cars is that the car has little to no body roll and what appears to be a very firm set up yet when needed it can deliver a smooth and fluid ride.

The soft ride of the R8 sets it apart from the competition as well as its modest yet super car looks, I first saw the <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);" href="Audi R8 in Plymouth </a> and instantly fell in love with it. Pictures do not do it justice; it is one of those cars that have to been seen in flesh to get a feel for its beauty.

Ferrari Sports Car | 12 Famous Companies' Surprising Beginnings

But Nokia isn't the only company to have such a story. Here we take a look at 11 other popular companies that all have one thing in common: Surprising beginnings.

Abercrombie & FitchEnter an A&F store today and you're immediately aware "you're not in Kansas anymore." Each store is staffed by gorgeous "models" (aka sales associates), dimly lit and very loud (upbeat music is piped in at up to 90 decibels). The American teen apparel retailer is known for its controversial marketing (half-nude teens) and socially incorrect faux-pas ("It's all Relative in West Virginia" t-shirts that implied incestuous relationships). Today's stores are a far cry from the one founded back in 1892. Then its target audience wasn't precocious teens, but big game hunters, fisherman and other adventurers. Its shelves weren't stocked with trendy threads, but with tents, fishing poles and hunting gear.

NintendoThis multinational company, based in Japan, did get its start with games, but not the type you would expect. Before the Wii and Super Mario Bros., came simple playing cards. Nintendo Koppai was founded in 1889 to produce decks of cards produced from the bark of mulberry trees. At one point, it was a dominate player in the playing cards' market. It also got involved with a string of failed ventures (taxis, food and hotels), before the major success of its gaming systems in the 1980s.

GucciGucci may be most known for its luxury handbags today, but in 1921 it began as a small, family-owned saddlery shop in Florence, Italy. Its focus was on leather goods for the fine horsemen: saddles, boots, gloves and saddle bags.

HasbroIn 1926, brothers Henry, Hilal and Herman Hassenfeld began making pencil-box covers that were very popular at the time. They incorporated their company under the name Hassenfeld Brothers Incorporated. During the Great Depression, they had annual sales of $500,000 from sales of their pencil boxes and cloth zipper pouches filled with school supplies. In 1935, it began manufacturing the pencils as well. Toys didn't come until the end of the 1930s and were an extension of the company's line of school supplies. Initial offerings included modeling clay and play doctor's kits.

FerrariBy the age of 10, Enzo Ferrari had the love of racing running through his veins. At the age of 20, he became a test-driver for a small vehicle manufacturer. Soon after he turned to professional race car driving. Then in 1929, he founded the Scuderia Ferrari, a racing team. The organization didn't build cars but was a team that promoted owner-drivers in their races. It wasn't until late 1945, that Enzo began work on designing his first Ferrari sports car. It has been said that he was reluctant in selling his cars, doing so only to fund his much-loved Scuderia.

Tiffany & Co.While Tiffany's blue box dates all the way back to the year the store opened in 1837, the retailer is generally associated more with diamond rings and fine silver than they are with paper products. However, when the fancy goods retailer first opened, stationery was one of its main offerings.

CorningCorning is a world leader in specialty glass and ceramics. It focuses on high-tech applications like Gorilla Glass for LCD screens and computer monitors and telecommunications hardware for internet and telephone communications (among many other things). However, before Corning was making heat-resistant windows for spacecraft, it was making something more down to earth: lightbulbs. In fact, in 1879, Thomas Edison himself asked Corning to produce the "glass envelopes" for his new invention.

DuPontDuPont is an American chemical company. Its claims to fame include the invention of neoprene, nylon, Corian, Teflon, Mylar, Kevlar and Lycra -- just to name a few. However, when the company was founded in 1802, it had one focus: explosives. E.I. du Pont opened his first gun powder mill on the Brandywine River in Wilmington, Delaware. By the mid-19th century, it was the largest supplier of gun powder to the U.S. military.

IBMThink IBM and you think computers. You don't think automatic meat slicers, coffee grinders and time clocks. But long before International Business Machines was manufacturing computer hardware and software, it was helping businesses be more efficient by supplying them with these types of machines to do so.

John DeereBefore the famous John Deere tractor, came John Deere the blacksmith. According to its Corporate History Web page , in 1837, Deere fashioned a polished-steel plow that let pioneer farmers cut clean furrows through sticky Midwest prairie soil. By 1838, he begins manufacturing and selling them. It's not until 1918 that the company's signature tractors enter the picture to become its basic product.

SonyThe Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corp. was founded in 1946 by Akio Morita and Masura Ibuka. The pair started their partnership in a radio repair shop. In 1958, they renamed their company the Sony Corporation. Their company was the first one to make transistor radios commercially successful. Today, they make everything from PlayStations to camcorders to e-Readers.

Lamborghini Sports Car | Dr. Porsche's 1,001 Horsepower "beetle"

Dr. Porsche's 1,001 Horsepower "Beetle"

In the early days of the automobile, Ferdinand Porsche, himself an Austrian, served as a designer at the Daimler motorcar manufacturing branch there. He was a top-notch engineer, as well. In those days, car makers' reputations relied significantly upon the success of their products on the race tracks; and Porsche's own creations for Daimler were remarkably adept at winning. His record had a direct and positive bearing on the sales of Daimler's compact cars for everyday use. He had a love affair with little cars that stayed with him for life.

In 1923, Porsche moved himself and his family to Daimler's headquarters in Stuttgart, where he was appointed technical director of the entire company. His son (also Ferdinand, nicknamed "Ferry"), then only 16 years old, was recognized as having a special talent for design and was given special permission to work at the factory with his father. Ferdinand Sr. continued to pursue his main interest in designing small cars, but ran afoul of management's changing imperatives after the merger of Daimler with Benz, and the ensuing focus on large, luxurious automobiles. The relationship could no longer be sustained, so Porsche departed and opened his own design office in Stuttgart in 1931. Meanwhile, his son Ferry had been working for Bosch while studying physics and engineering; and when Ferdinand Senior left Daimler-Benz to strike out for himself, Ferry joined him there. From that time forward, the two remained a father-and-son team of uncommon talent.

Of course, the twenties and the early thirties were years of great difficulty in Germany. The Weimar Republic had failed. Hyperinflation ruled the day. My grandmother, who was born near Munich, told me of returning to Germany in 1922 and seeing, with her own eyes, people hauling paper money - loaded into wheelbarrows!

Hitler's National Socialist party did not enjoy a majority in the Reichstag in the early Thirties, but it was the largest minority. President Hindenburg thought, mistakenly, that he might be able to co-opt this charismatic troublemaker by appointing him Chancellor of Germany. It proved to be the opening wedge in a power-grab which overrode democratic impulses by means of fear, intimidation, and sheer physical force. The deed was done; there was no turning back. The designs of the tyrant were enabled in some measure by the felt need of an exhausted populace for stability and the promise of better times to come.

One of Hitler's early domestic priorities was the design and production of a small car for the masses, a "people's car." A design competition ensued. Porsche was there. He was able to draw upon his experience in designing and engineering small cars for the former Daimler company. Even so, he was not alone; his son Ferry was with him, together with a group of talented engineers whom he recruited from past years. One entrant proposed a small car with a radial engine, which proved impractical, possibly from a cooling standpoint. Porsche's design called for a very small two-door, four-passenger car with an air-cooled "flat four" cylinder engine mounted in the rear. Hitler liked it; enough said. The "people's car" was born as a State enterprise, featuring a one-liter engine churning out 23.5 horsepower.

Porsche became one of Hitler's favorites. He was showered with recognition and munificences. Ferry continued to rise in importance and prominence in the company, which designed and produced successful race cars in addition to the "Volkswagen" and vehicles for the German military.

Hitler had taken a fancy to Grand Prix race cars as a propaganda tool. Daimler entered the competition to design and build a new generation of the breed. The existing Audi automobile company and three others combined to form the new "Auto Union" Grand Prix race car manufacturing and racing company. Porsche became Auto Union's chief designer, on contract, while still managing Volkswagen. The resulting Daimler and Auto Union race cars blew away the competition in the 1930's, overseas and here in the United States. I even remember the name of one of the premier German drivers of that time: Maury Rose. I remember those cars, too. They were huge. And they were loud. They didn't sound like the high-pitched buzzing bumblebees of today's race cars; the engines were much slower-turning. The locus must have been Roosevelt Raceway on Long Island. The Auto Union cars sported the four intertwined circles on the grille, just as Audi cars do today. (I had also been present at the adjacent Roosevelt Field when Lindbergh took off for France some years earlier. I was present, but I hadn't been born quite yet. My parents told me and my siblings later, many times, that Lindy j-u-u-u-u-s-t cleared the telephone wires at the end of the runway).

An entire new Volkswagen factory was built and opened at Wolfsburg. Although the car enjoyed considerable sales success in Germany, Hitler's greater ambitions got in the way; which, of course, led to massive destruction, the end of the "thousand-year Reich" fantasy, the suicide of Hitler in a Berlin bunker, and - unfortunately - the imprisonment of Ferdinand Porsche as a war criminal for 20 months in a dank old jail in Dijon, which adversely affected his health. No doubt, Hitler never knew that Porsche had helped a Jewish employee escape from Germany. A fellow prisoner was his son-in-law Anton Pich, a Viennese lawyer who was married to Louise Porsche, Ferry's sister.

Ferry Porsche was able to raise the 500,000 francs bail which was required for his own release from custody. (The State-owned Volkswagen enterprise was booty of war. The British Government delivered ownership of the company to the German State in 1948, which offered shares in the company on the public stock market in 1960). Ferry moved back to Austria and set up a machining and repair shop in Gmund with his sister Louise. Eventually, he won a contract to design a race car for the Cisitalia racing team, and then for another, to be called the Porsche 360 Cisitalia. This car was to have a mid-mounted engine and four-wheel drive. It marked the first time that the family name had ever been attached to a vehicle.

Ferry could not forever divorce himself from his father's love affair with small cars. Accordingly, while working on the Cisitalia race cars he also found time to design the Porsche 356, and arranged with the Volkswagen company to allow him to build it on the "Beetle's" chassis and mechanical underpinnings. Meantime, the engine had been enhanced so as to produce 35 horsepower. The first 50 cars were built by hand at Gmund, with aluminum bodies. 6 more were sent to Switzerland, where cabriolet bodies were installed on the chassis. Ferry also eventually assembled sufficient bail in order to effectuate release of his father Ferdinand and of Anton Pich from prison, which was accomplished on August 1, 1947. Upon arrival in Austria, Ferdinand inspected Ferry's designs for the Porsche 360 Cisitalia and for the Porsche 356, and announced that he would have created the same designs. Although he was back again in the midst of the car manufacturing business, his months in prison had damaged his health. He died in January 1951.

(The Porsche 356 was a success! Almost 78,000 were made and sold by 1965).

Meanwhile, the Beetle design was aging. It needed serious upgrading. The general manager of Volkswagen came to Ferry with a proposal that was too good to turn down:

Ferry would improve the Beetle.

In exchange, Volkswagen would provide to him:

A percentage of the profits derived from the sale of every improved Beetle;

All of the raw materials for building Ferry's sports cars;

Use of Volkswagen's worldwide network of dealers for sale of Porsche cars;

Use of Volkswagen's worldwide network of technical support;

Ferry would be the only Volkswagen dealer in Austria.

Done! That sealed a co-dependency which persists to this day. Ferry brought his company back to Stuttgart. He resumed production of the Porsche 356 and started work on a new engine which was to be called the Carrera. He raced a special version of the 356 at LeMans in 1951. The car won in its category. He won again at Targa Florio in 1959 and at LeMans in 1970 with a model called the 917.

By now, the 356 was aging too; and there was demand for a new model. The result was the acclaimed 911, which has been the longest-running sports car in production, ever. The 911 was basically the 356 fitted with the new liquid-cooled six-cylinder Carrera engine, which featured an astounding 300 horsepower.

Ferry continued to run the company, which he changed from a limited partnership to the German equivalent of a "corporation" in 1972. Even so, the two related families - Porsche and Pich - continued to retain and maintain effective control of the company. When Ferry died in 1998, his son Ferdinand Alexander took his place at the helm.

Meanwhile, Anton and Louise (Porsche) Pich's son Ferdinand Karl Pich, also an automotive engineer, had served at the Porsche company, where he was instrumental in the development of the Porsche 917. He developed a Diesel engine for Mercedes while in private engineering practice, moved to the Audi subsidiary of Volkswagen, and then, in 1993, to the Volkswagen Group itself, where he became Chairman and CEO. He retired from the Board of Management in 2002, but he still serves in an advisory capacity as Chairman of the Supervisory Board. In other words, he is very much On The Scene at Volkswagen. All of this, it may be noted, proceeds apace while he himself still owns about 13% of the Porsche company. He has thirteen children by four women, so the family tradition may continue for a while. There is a strict unwritten rule in the family that nobody talks to the press.

While Mr. Pich was in Management at Volkswagen, he was at least partly responsible for several successes: the New Beetle in 1998 (really a Volkswagen Golf in disguise), increased market penetration by Audi, creation of a perception in the public mind of justification for premium pricing, and the acquisition of the Bentley, Bugatti, and Lamborghini brands. His biggest gaffe was the acquisition of Rolls-Royce. The devil was in the details. He thought he was buying both the car manufacturing facility and the name; but as it turned out, the right to the name belonged to BMW. Another probable mistake is the Volkswagen Phaeton, a super-luxury car intended to compete with the Mercedes-Benz Maybach. (Ah, there's another memory-jogger. I remember the low growl of the Hindenburg's Maybach Diesel engines as it passed low over my house).

At Volkswagen, Pich laid the groundwork for repeated doses of quite sensational news. The Bugatti marque claimed a fine record in racing, but had lain dormant for decades. He set in motion a reinvention of the name. Independently (?), the Porsche company, for reasons of its own, possibly at least as defensive in nature as it may have been geared to the hope of profit, acquired 18.5% of Volkswagen in October 2005. Thus, for the first time, the Porsche family had (indirectly) become part owners of the ongoing business which had produced Dr. Porsche's first Beetle. For the first time, "their name was on the building," though in small letters. Then, in March 2007, Porsche raised that ownership interest almost to 31%. It announced that it had done so in order to preclude any competitor from buying a large ownership interest in Volkswagen and to preclude any attempt to sell off the Volkswagen Group in pieces, which might have been a threat to Porsche's dependency on Volkswagen. In March of this year, 2008, Porsche announced that it intends to increase its ownership of Volkswagen to 51%, at the same time that it announced its intention to acquire more than a half-interest in Scania, the Swedish truck manufacturer controlled by the Wallenberg family. Last month (September 2008), Porsche announced that it already owns 35% of the Volkswagen Group, which is probably a controlling interest by anyone's reckoning; and that it would acquire Audi from Volkswagen outright! (All by itself, that maneuver might have given any raider pause). Probably some of those additional Volkswagen shares were acquired via the open Frankfurt market; but my guess is that substantial blocks were acquired in private transactions. (In Germany, cross-ownership interests are much more common than they are in the United States, quite possibly to an extent which would be illegal here. Deutsche Bank's fingers are everywhere; Lufthansa's are not far behind). There are legal issues outstanding; but Porsche has made its moves aggressively and it is up to others, whether governments or companies or common folk, to say them nay. "Fait accompli." The Porsche family name now sits (figuratively) in bright lights atop Volkswagen's headquarters building. The sign is invisible, but it's there, just like the little people who scurry around in the Black Forest not all that far away.

All the while, that Bugatti adventure has been strumming along in the background. Mr. Pich's vision was to build an over-the-top superfast luxury car bearing the revered Bugatti nameplate. Volkswagen has done that. The result is the Bugatti Veyron, featuring an 8 liter, 16-cylinder, quad-turbocharged engine delivering 1,001 horsepower while delivering a top speed of 253 miles per hour, all of this bargain-priced at 1.1 million Euros, more in North America. The car, which is named after a driver for the original Bugatti company who won the 24 Hours of LeMans in 1939, is handmade in Alsace. Only 500 will be built. Two have been wrecked. At top speed, the car achieves a fuel economy of 2.05 miles per gallon, which would drain the tank in less than 13 minutes. But take comfort: there's a safety factor built-in there, since the Michelin tires would last for a full 15 minutes.

(It may be self-satisfying to make fun of the sheer excess of the thing; but honestly now, mate, wouldn't you love to have that car in your hands even for ten minutes?)

So there you are, Dr. Porsche. Your family still has a controlling interest in the Porsche sports car business, and now it also controls the thriving company which made your original Beetle. On the way by, they raised the horsepower of your car a bit, from 23.5 to 1,001. But that's really a side issue. The big story is that Porsche plus Volkswagen must be considered, effectively, as a single enterprise. If you and Ferry could just come back for ten minutes and look around......

Ferrari has become unanimous with speed, status and subtlety.

Ferrari's autos are among the most fascinating of automobiles to have and drive, and are one of the final standing symbols of wealth in the world. A Ferrari is extraordinarily cheap if you do not mind purchasing a second hand auto.

A Ferrari is certainly a who and not a what! Ferrari cars, are one of the most wanted cars in the world, usually due to both the firms and automobiles reputes, they're also regarded as a sybmol of success.Ferrari F40 is among the fastest and most pricey ferrari vehicles. Ferraris are an idea of life as much as an auto, and they have kept their love intact, right up into this age of computer created everything. A Ferrari is, to several, more than an auto : it's a work of creativity. It is like no other auto in the world, the hint of the leather, the sound of the exhaust, nothing comes close.

A Ferrari is usually not an automobile to drive on a day-to-day basis, it definitely can be driven regularly, giving the owner a feeling of pride and a little taste of the Ferrari mystique. Ferrari road vehicles, noted for wonderful styling by design homes like Pininfarina, have long been one of the final accessories for the wealthy. Ferrari is the most oldest team left in the championship, not to mention the most prosperous : the team holds almost each Formula One record. Ferrari's first models were sports / racing automobiles quite dissimilar from the grand touring models that followed.

Ferrari was quickly moved into the Gran Turismo market, and the majority of the firm's sales remain in this area. Ferrari entered the mid-engined 12-cylinder fray with the Berlinetta Fighter in 1971. In the mid 1990s, Ferrari added the letter "F " to the start of all models ( a practice quickly deserted after the F512M and F355, but recently picked up again with the F430 ).

The Ferrari F430 is a two-seater that can be found in 2 forms ; the Berlinetta and the Spider. The F430 has been produced since 2004 and production continues till now.

Ferrari Fact | Massa Records Second Straight Victory

Following a good showing at the 2007 Bahrain Grand Prix, Ferrari driver Felipe Massa once again showed his driving prowess when he took pole position and eventually took it straight to winning the Spanish Grand Prix. This win made Massa the first multiple winner this season. In both the Bahrain and Spanish race, Massa took the pole position and recorded the fastest lap. At the Spanish Grand Prix, Massa recorded a lap time of 1:22:680 in lap number 14. Sharing the podium with Massa are team McLaren teammates Lewis Hamilton in second and Fernando Alonso in third. Meanwhile Massa's teammate Kimi Raikkonen who started third on the grid was forced to retire after his car's electric components failed on lap number nine.

The race's start was called off after Jarno Trulli who was driving for Toyota stalled his car on the grid which resulted to another formation lap. Aside from Trulli, Alonso was the first driver to receive the first beating of the race when he was forced off the track after colliding lightly with Felipe Massa. Alonso though regained control of his car and slid in at fourth behind Massa, Hamilton and Raikkonen respectively. While Alonso was lucky that his race did not end with the slight collision, eight drivers were no so lucky including Raikkonen.

On the first lap, Alex Wurz who was driving for Williams Toyota met an accident which saw him retiring. The second casualty is Mark Weber driving for Renault when his car's hydraulics failed on lap number seven. Another driver who did not finish the race is Jarno Trulli of Toyota when his car's fuel pressure forced him to the pits. Kimi Raikkonen was the fourth casualty. Scott Speed suffered a tire blowout on lap number nine. On lap number 19, Vitantonio Liuzzi who was driving for Toro Roso Ferrari also retired. Toyota's Ralf Schumacher also did not finish the race due to suspension problems on lap number 44. The final casualty of the fourth race of the season is BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld when his car's gearbox acted up on the 46th lap.

Meanwhile, a milestone was reached by the rookie driver Lewis Hamilton after his third consecutive second place finish. The British driver became the youngest driver to lead the drive's championship. It is only fitting that Hamilton broke the record of team McLaren founder Bruce McLaren. Hamilton currently has 30 points to his credit and his lead in the driver's championship shows his consistency since he has yet to win a race but still managed to top the driver's championship. Next to Hamilton on the standings is teammate Fernando Alonso, the two-time defending champion with 28 points to his credit. This year's only multiple winners Massa sits on third with 27 points. The consistency of Lewis Hamilton is evident in the fact that for all of his four races in his short career in Formula One, he has recorded four podium finishes. Currently, only McLaren and Ferrari achieved podium finishes.

Following his record-breaking win at the Spanish Grand Prix, the 22-year old Hamilton is showered with much praise. Sir Jackie Stewart, the three-time world champion, is one of the most vocal admirers of the young driver. Sir Jackie Stewart, who is known as the Flying Scotsman, has this to say: "I think he, (Hamilton) is going to rewrite the book. I think Lewis will create the new benchmark for a whole generation of drivers." He added that: "There are hundreds of millions with driving licenses, very few million have competition licenses, a few hundred thousand do it on a regular basis. A few thousand make a living out of it, a few hundred make a decent living out of it and 22 are on the grid and of those 22 only six are any good. And out of those six only three are extraordinary talents and out of those three there is usually only one genius. Lewis is exceptional. We'll see a new generation of what I call properly-prepared drivers. Schumacher became that - but I am talking about fully rounded. Schumacher was not as good as he should have been. Not in his driving but the total package."

Meanwhile, the young driver has this to say: "We're leading the championship, I couldn't be happier. I've been working so many years for this, me and my family, and to be in this position is a dream. I'm enjoying it, and I need to keep enjoying it."

The driver previously became the youngest person to be awarded an F1 contract when he was just thirteen years old. He is also the first back driver of African or Caribbean descent to compete in the Formula one. Aside from these distinctions, Hamilton is also the first driver to record top three finishes in the four Formula One race he has participated in. He currently drives the Number two car for McLaren which have been known for fielding cars with higher performance output than vehicles equipped with aftermarket parts such as Edge products.

Following the second and third finishes for Hamilton and Alonso respectively, team McLaren increased their lead in the constructor's championship. The team currently has 58 points while Ferrari sits in second with 49 points. BMW Sauber is in third with 24 points. Renault is on the fourth spot with 11 points after four races. Williams and Toyota are tied with five points each. Red Bull is number seven with four points. Super Aguri recorded their first point at the Spanish Grand Prix to make them the eighth team in the standings.

Lamborghini Ferrari | Mobile Co. Could Recruit Automaker

MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) - The sign says 'Future Home of the Alabama Motorsports Park'. But it could be the site of Revenge. The Revenge Supercar, that is.

"High performance car, Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari, performs in high tier of market," said former Mobile Mayor Mike Dow.

Dow, who spearheads the racetrack movement, said automobile maker Revenge Supercars has its sights set on 200 acres of land on the Prichard-Saraland line. The land is on the Highway 158 corridor and Highway 45.

Dow is asking the Mobile County Commission for support enticing the auto maker to move to area. He said Revenge Supercars would bring 600 jobs, with an average pay of $50,000.

Dow adds Revenge Supercars also plans to build a 4.2 mile endurance and high performance track at the site.

"Eighteen suppliers have shown an interest in our area if the automaker comes here. Three have committed to coming, if it does," said Dow.

Willie Lanier invested in the original Motorsports Park idea to build a world class race track in north Mobile. Lanier said he's behind this idea as well.

"Many of us who took a risk five, six years ago to bring something here. Without us there would be no revenge, would be no nothing," said Lanier.

Dow won't say how much financial support he's asking the county for.

"This is economic development. You know me, I don't talk about the details. Regardless this car will pay for itself," added Dow.

Mobile County Commissioner Mike Dean said he is hesitant to jump on board so fast, since he isn't sure how the plan would affect bond rates, nd what if it doesn't perform as well as Dow hopes it will.

Prichard Mayor Ron Davis hopes commissioners will vote to support the project. He spoke with them Thursday.

"I went in with a hope and a prayer to hope that their hearts are in touch with mine. This could help everyone, especially the city of Prichard," said Davis.

Davis said it could completely change Prichard's tax base.

Residents in Prichard said this economic boost is just what the city needs. Especially a city some consider is on its last leg. The city is struggling to pay its pensioners, and facing crime and poverty.

"It sounds great. I think it would be a great idea. Could bring jobs, you know it is great," said Kenneth Edwards, who runs a barber shop in downtown Prichard.

Megan Wallace also owns a business in Prichard. She said the development would boost her property value, among other things.

"I think it is an awesome idea. Anything that would help out these young people, and it would help the crime go down," said Wallace.

Officials said the automobile plant wouldn't replace the racetrack, it would help jump start the project. It's a project politicians, business owners and residents alike are counting on in Prichard.

Lamborghini Ferrari | Enforced Break Looks Westwood's Best Bet

GOLF: LEE WESTWOOD played on through the pain yesterday but it looks more likely that he will become world number one by taking time off next week than by finishing second at St Andrews tomorrow.

The Ryder Cup star, who suffered a recurrence of his calf injury during an opening 70 in the Dunhill Links Championship, added a level-par 72 at St Andrews.

Needing a first or second-place finish to dethrone Woods this weekend, Westwood is outside the top 30 at halfway and 10 shots behind surprise leader John Parry.

If he misses his defence of the Portugal Masters next week, however, the 37-year-old from Worksop will overtake Woods on the rankings â€" calculated over a two-year period â€" at the end of this month.

"It was pretty much the same as yesterday," he said of the injury.

"I'm just struggling with it and I'm probably just going to get through this week and make a decision."

Asked if it could mean another lengthy break after this week â€" the Ryder Cup was his first competitive action since August 6th â€" he replied: "Could be, yeah. My gut instinct is to get it better. I'm just consciously thinking about it and the longer the day goes on the worse it gets. It's not great and shutting down for the rest of the year is an option."

England's Parry left nine of Europe's Ryder Cup side trailing in his wake at St Andrews â€" in an event he was not qualified for until he won his first European Tour title two weeks ago.

The 23-year-old from Harrogate, a team-mate of Rory McIlroy at the 2007 Walker Cup, led by four at halfway after a brilliant 65.

"It's nice to be here and I've holed putts from everywhere," said Parry, who from struggling to keep his card is now on course for a massive first prize of over €575,000.

His Vivendi Trophy victory in Paris was worth €190,000 and he celebrated that by buying himself a car â€" not a Lamborghini, Ferrari or Porsche, but a Vauxhall Astra.

"I would have bought something a bit nicer, but I've only just learnt to drive, so the insurance companies don't seem to like me at the minute â€" and my parking's not very good."

Parry turned pro three years ago like McIlroy, but while the Irishman was an instant hit Parry failed to come through the qualifying school and had to go away to the "third division" EuroPro Tour.

"I didn't have any money at all, but my manager sort of backed me and I think I came out about even," he said. From that he earned a place on the Challenge Tour and, thanks to a closing 63 for a win in this same week last year, he graduated from that to the main circuit.

Sweden's Martin Erlandsson, yet to win on Tour, is in second place after a 68 at Carnoustie, the hardest of the three courses used for the celebrity pro-am.

Three players are a further stroke back â€" big-hitting Spaniard Alvaro Quiros and Ryder Cup pair Ross Fisher and Martin Kaymer.

They were all at St Andrews, Fisher having a 68 and both Quiros and Kaymer carding 69s.

Monday's match-winning hero Graeme McDowell, playing with his father Kenny, also shot 68 to move up to sixth place on six under, while Pádraig Harrington, cup vice-captain Thomas Bjorn and defending champion Simon Dyson are all five under. In contrast to Parry, McIlroy struggled to a 74 yesterday and, at two over par, needs a good score at Carnoustie today to make the cut.
